The Invisible Business Index · 2026

81.8% of local businesses have no website

We checked 4,700 local businesses in 9 cities across the UK, Australia & Ireland, spanning 7 trades. Most can't be found in the searches that decide who gets the job.

A growing, open dataset — new countries and cities added over time.

Methodology

Business counts and web-presence come from OpenStreetMap, queried live via the Overpass API. A business is counted as “has a website” if its OSM record carries any of: website, contact:website, url.

OSM undercounts websites — a business can have a site OSM never recorded — so these figures are an upper bound on the truly invisible. Trades with fewer than 30 records in a city are excluded so small samples don't skew a headline. Data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL).
